EPA’s Own Projections Show New Energy Rule Could Harm Vulnerable Communities

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized the new Affordable “Clean” Energy (ACE) rule in June, which replaces the Clean Power Plan. The EPA finalized this rule despite EPA’s own projections that showed the ACE rule will likely cause harm to vulnerable communities around the country. This is because the new rule allows states to set standards based on efficiency, and in some areas this means power plants may operate more, creating more pollution and damaging health even more.
We know more every day about how harmful air pollution is to health. It causes lung and heart diseases, strokes, and is linked to kidney disease, dementia, and cognitive problems in children and adults. We need strong policies that protect us, especially communities that are vulnerable.
