Air Pollution Worsens in U.S., After 10 Year Of Improving

Fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) rose in the United States for the first time in a decade, increasing 5.5% from 2016 to 2018. From 2009-2016 PM2.5 pollution had decreased by 25%.

One of the researchers, Nick Muller at Carnegie Mellon University, said “After a decade or so of reductions, this increase is a real about-face.”

Researchers estimate the the increased  air pollution was responsible for almost 10,000 additional deaths.

This is not what we need to be healthy, and makes the Independent Review Panel recommendation to strengthen the standard even more needed.  (We posted about the new recommendation yesterday, scroll through our “Latest Headlines” to see it )
