Data centers are expanding rapidly across the country, and Georgia has emerged as one of the fastest-growing markets for new development. Anchored by the Atlanta metropolitan region, the state has attracted sustained investment and has become an important hub for digital infrastructure in the Southeast. Today, Georgia hosts more than 200 data center facilities statewide, representing a significant and growing share of the region’s capacity.
As data centers continue to expand and spread across the state, counties and municipalities are beginning to consider how best to guide this trend. The Energy Policy and Innovation Center’s Georgia Data Center Ordinance Hub was therefore created to support these efforts by providing clear, transparent information on how Georgia jurisdictions are regulating data center projects. The Hub compiles and summarizes local land-use ordinances, one of the primary policy tools communities use to manage the impacts and opportunities associated with data center expansion.
This hub tracks 15 regulatory topics commonly addressed in data center ordinances, ranging from site planning and building design to power infrastructure, environmental protections, and facility decommissioning. In addition, the Hub monitors local data center moratoria and legislative activity in Georgia related to data center development.
Together, these resources are intended to help policymakers, planners, researchers, and community stakeholders better understand how data center development is being governed across Georgia.
