Fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) rose in the United States for the first time in a decade, increasing 5.5% from 2016 to 2018. From 2009-2016 PM2.5 pollution had decreased by 25%.
One of the researchers, Nick Muller at Carnegie Mellon University, said “After a decade or so of reductions, this increase is a real about-face.”
Researchers estimate the the increased air pollution was responsible for almost 10,000 additional deaths.
