AL.com reports that the city of Mountain Park, AL, a suburb of Birmingham, is replacing its park maintenance equipment (trimmers, leaf blowers, etc.) with battery powered maintenance tools. The mayor comments that the program has be “overwhelmingly successful.”
The city paid $10,000 to determine how much air pollution and noise could be prevented, and $18,000 for the new equipment. They started with one park, have expanded to 3 other areas of the city, and are looking to expand to the whole city.
The new equipment is much quieter, and the report commissioned by the city shows it is preventing nearly 18,000 pounds of toxic emissions including particulate pollution, carbon monoxide, and chemicals that form ozone on hot days.
The city is being presented a Green Zone Certification at the City Council meeting tonight (June 7).
This is an example of a small scale policy change that your city, county, or school system can do, that makes life so much healthier and more enjoyable.
