Clean air is a passion for Mothers & Others volunteer Dr. Jennifer Caicedo, a pediatric allergist and immunologist in Charlotte. She informs her patients and community regularly how air quality affects health. She recently helped M&O produce Climate Change & Children’s Health, a webcast for health professionals. It can be viewed here.
Dr. Caicedo, began to connect the importance of good air quality when she saw a young child who had recently been diagnosed with asthma. “Her father asked me at the visit if the family should think about selling their house and moving,” she recalls. “I asked why, and he told me that their house was close to a major highway, and he was concerned that the location of the home had caused his daughter to develop asthma. This was the point when I realized how far reaching the problem is, and that we all need to do our part to mitigate the effects of climate change.”
Dr. Caicedo, is past president of the Charlotte Pediatric Society and vice-president for the North Carolina Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Society. She is actively involved in the Mecklenburg County Medical Society and serves as Medical Management Co-Chair for the North Carolina Asthma Alliance. In February of 2015, she was appointed by The American Academy of Pediatrics and The Allergy & Asthma Network as North Carolinaʼs sole Medical Home Champion for Allergy Asthma & Anaphylaxis. Dr. Caicedo thinks it is critical that the medical community make their voice heard on air quality and climate change.
