Flooding Closes Schools in North Carolina

Severe storms brought strong winds and 3-5″ of rain to North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and other southern states. There was flooding in many areas as the extreme rainfall washed into rivers and creeks. Tens of thousands of people lost power. Schools in Alabama, Tennessee and North Carolina closed early 2/6, and were closed or had delayed openings on 2/7.

We know that climate change will make storms more severe, and cause more flooding. Extreme weather has a major impact on schools, with closings and delays. Some schools serve as shelters during emergency evacuations. Extreme weather disrupts schools, students’ education, businesses, and people’s lives.

We can expect stronger storms and extreme weather due to climate change, and the weather this week serves as an example of what we can expect.

It’s time to #ActOnClimate.
