Expert Review Panel Recommends Stronger Standard for PM2.5

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) published the findings of the Independent Particulate Matter Review Panel yesterday. The panel consists of 20 experts in particulate matter air pollution. The panel used to be part of an EPA Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee, but was disbanded a year ago by the EPA. The scientists felt their expertise could offer valuable insight on health and air pollution, so they met recently, hosted by UCS.

The Panel stated that “Retaining the current primary standards is not scientifically justifiable” and recommended lowering the annual fine particulate matter standard (PM2.5) from 12 micrograms per cubic meter to between 8 and 10 micrograms per cubic meter . The panel also recommended lowering the 24-hour PM2.5 standard from the current 35micrograms per cubic meter  to between 25-30 micrograms per cubic meter .

Given the continuing scientific evidence of harm and deaths occurring at levels well below the current standard, this is a strong recommendation. The lower the standard, the better for health. This is true for everyone: children, babies, adults, and seniors. It will also mean lower carbon emissions and help fight climate change too. Everyone will benefit.
