Colorada Adopts Stricter Methane Leak Controls

The Colorado Independent is reporting that yesterday the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission finished a 3-day series of hearings and then adopted new regulations for the oil and gas industry that will cut methane leaks.

This will improve health in two ways: by preventing greenhouse gases from going into the air (helping fight climate change), and by lowering concentrations of methane and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that escape in the leaks and contribute to ozone formation. Because methane and other VOCs stay in the air for years, this will also help reduce ozone in other states where the methane is carried by the wind.

Companies will be required to inspect for methane (and other greenhouse gases) leaks from all kinds of equipment twice a year instead of once a year, and wells within 1000 feet of a home will have to be inspected monthly.

This is good news for all of us, not just people living in Colorado. Clean Air for everyone!
