Megan Rowling at Reuters wrote a news story about a new report from CARE International. The CARE report shows that women are more affected by climate change: displacement, extra farm work, health threats from lack of supplies or little access to healthcare, sexual violence in displacement camps.
CARE says that displacement from climate change is already happening now, and is a harsh reality for millions of people. Extreme storms, droughts, and floods are forcing people to flee. Men may have to go elsewhere to try to find income in hopes of sending it home, leaving women with more household and farm tasks.
CARE recommends gathering more data on how climate change is affecting women, having more women lead efforts responding to climate threats, and more funding to help women adapt to the changing climate. This could include more resilient crops, access to micro-credit, and more. The report included information on CARE projects in India and Somalia, and how those projects helped the women and the whole community.
