As the NHC Commissioners consider revisions to the Special Use Permit in June, I pray our family’s story gives them a reason to protect the SUP. I am the mother of three children all born with asthma. My oldest has severe persistent asthma and my younger two have moderate persistent asthma.

Our story began seven years ago when the medical management of their asthma was failing. In 2005, our hometown of Springfield, Massachusetts was ranked #8 on the top ten list of worst cities for asthmatics. Our Pulmonologist recommended relocating within five miles of the ocean, as the constant breeze sweeps away asthma triggers. We took a leap of faith and made a drastic 700-mile move out of New England to Wilmington.

The children’s asthma improved dramatically with the geographical change, and while it hasn’t been a cure, asthma no longer defines us… My oldest son was invited to play the National Anthem on his saxophone to open the Quintiles Marathon this year; he could never have played a wind instrument prior to the move! These are true moments of grace that remind me the move was well worth the sacrifices made.

However, if Titan comes to Wilmington my family will be forced to move again to maintain our quality of life: one unencumbered by asthma.

That thought alone leaves me breathless.
