Air Pollution Changes Brain Structure in Children

A new study has found changes in the microstructure of white matter of children age 9-12y based on prenatal or childhood exposure to air pollution. Both times of exposure caused changes. During the prenatal period, fine particulates (PM2.5) and silicon had the strongest effect; during childhood, nitrogen oxides (NOx), zinc, and oxidative pollution had the strongest effect.

All of these air pollutants come from traffic. We need clean transportation including clean vehicles and more transit.
